Imaging in Vasculitis: Classification and Modalities

Vasculitis is classified by the calibre of vessel predominantly affected. Imaging modality selection should follow this classification directly.

  • Large vessel disease (aorta and major branches) is best assessed with CTA, MRA, or FDG-PET.

  • Medium vessel disease (renal, mesenteric, coronary arteries) is interrogated with CTA or DSA.

  • Small vessel disease (capillaries, venules) lies below the resolution of angiography; imaging findings are indirect.
