Differentiating Retinoblastoma vs. Coats Disease

When evaluating a pediatric globe lesion, distinguishing retinoblastoma from Coats disease is vital.

Retinoblastoma frequently presents with calcifications.

Conversely, Coats disease generally lacks calcifications, occurs in slightly older male children, features a normal or small globe, and shows a characteristic V-shaped hyperintense retinal exudate/detachment on T1 and T2-weighted MRI.
