Vascular Pedicle Width on Chest Xray

The vascular pedicle width is defined on chest radiography as the horizontal distance from the left subclavian artery origin to the superior vena cava at the level where it crosses the right mainstem bronchus.

  • A width > 70–80 mm generally suggests hypervolemia,

  • while a width < 50–60 mm indicates hypovolemia.
